SASSA has introduced a fourth payment day on Friday 7 August 2026 for beneficiaries selected for grant reviews or eLife Certification. If your grant pays on 7 August instead of the normal 4, 5, or 6 August, you must visit your nearest SASSA office to complete a review — or risk having your grant suspended in September 2026. SASSA sends an SMS to affected beneficiaries in advance.
New reports from Gauteng reveal that many SASSA Older Persons Grant recipients — receiving R2,400 per month — are renting out rooms in their homes and continuing to work well past 65 just to cover basic living costs. With food, transport, medication and utility bills eating through the grant in days, pensioners are sharing survival strategies that highlight the gap between the grant amount and the real cost of living.
SASSA confirmed August 2026 payment dates: Older Persons on Tuesday 4 August, Disability on Wednesday 5 August, Children's grants on Thursday 6 August. A fourth payment day on Friday 7 August applies to beneficiaries selected for grant reviews — those paid on 7 Aug must visit their nearest SASSA office. SRD R370 batches run from approximately 25 August.

Step 11 of 8
Are you a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognised refugee?
SASSA grants are only available to SA citizens, permanent residents, and officially recognised refugees.
How old are you?
Your age determines which grants are available. The Old Age Pension requires 60+. The SRD and Disability grants apply to ages 18–59.
What is your marital or partnership status?
If married or living with a partner, your combined income is used for the means test — the threshold is doubled.
What is your total monthly income from ALL sources?
Include wages, UIF, informal work, and any other income. If married, use your combined household income.
Are you currently employed or receiving UIF payments?
To qualify for the SRD R370 grant you must not be employed or receiving UIF. Occasional informal work that keeps income below R624/month does not disqualify you from SRD.
Are you currently receiving any SASSA grant?
You cannot receive two SASSA grants at the same time. If you already receive one, you are generally not eligible for another.
Do you have a permanent or long-term disability?
To qualify for the Disability Grant, a medical professional (doctor or nurse) must be able to confirm a permanent or serious temporary disability that prevents you from working.
Are you the primary caregiver for a child under 18?
A primary caregiver is the person who takes main responsibility for a child's daily care — this does not have to be the biological parent.

Is the child you care for permanently disabled?
A child with a permanent severe disability may qualify for the Care Dependency Grant (R2,400/month), which is separate from the regular Child Support Grant.
About SASSA Grant Eligibility
💰
SRD R370 Grant
For unemployed South Africans aged 18–59. Income must be below R624/month. Apply at srd.sassa.gov.za.
The means test is the income and asset check SASSA uses to determine whether you qualify financially for a social grant. Each grant has its own threshold. If your income exceeds the limit, your application will be declined even if you meet all other criteria.
For the SRD R370 grant, SASSA cross-checks your income against SARS tax records, UIF records, and bank transaction data. For other grants (Old Age, Disability, Child Support), you will be asked to provide proof of income and assets at your local SASSA office.
